How to use the white screen
- Keep white, or pick warm white, cool white, a gray or another color.
- Click the big white box. It fills your screen and hides everything else, including the mouse pointer once you stop moving it.
- Set the brightness with your keyboard's brightness keys, your monitor's buttons or your system settings. A web page can't change it for you.
- Press ← or →, or swipe, to change the color. Double-click, double-tap or press Esc to go back.
What a white screen is good for
Finding dust, smudges and dead pixels
White shows every speck on the surface and every pixel that has gone dark. Look straight at the screen first, then from an angle, where smears and fingerprints catch the light. To check every pixel properly, step through all the colors of the dead pixel test.
Lighting your face on a video call
A white screen in front of you works as a soft fill light, which helps a lot in a dim room. Put a laptop, tablet or spare monitor behind your camera, a little above eye level, open this page on it and turn the brightness up. Warm white usually looks more natural on skin than pure white. Keep the light in front of you rather than to one side, or half your face will be in shadow.
Checking that brightness is even
On full white, look for darker corners, a brighter middle or a faint tint in one area. Some variation is normal, especially near the edges of large screens. For a closer look, use the gray screens in the monitor test, which show unevenness more clearly than white does.
A light for reading, tracing and photos
With the brightness up, a white screen gives an even, diffuse light: hold a sheet of thin paper against a tablet to trace a drawing, read a paper note in the dark, or light a small object for a photo with soft shadows.
Before you turn it on
- Full brightness on white is bright, especially in a dark room or close to your eyes. Start lower and turn it up.
- Laptops on battery and some monitors in eco modes dim the screen. Plug the laptop in for the brightest white.
- OLED screens, found on many phones and some laptops and TVs, can limit the brightness of an all-white picture, and any bright image left in place for hours adds wear. Don't leave a white screen on all day.
- The page keeps the screen awake while it's showing, in browsers that allow it. Untick the box if you'd rather your usual timers apply.
White doesn't look right? Try these fixes
The white looks dim or gray
Windows 11
- Open Settings → System → Display and turn the brightness up. Turn off automatic brightness under Brightness if it keeps lowering it.
- On a laptop, turn off battery saver in Settings → System → Power & battery (called Energy saver on newer versions), or plug it in.
macOS
- Open System Settings → Displays, turn off Automatically adjust brightness and drag the brightness up.
The white has a yellow or blue tint
Windows 11
- Turn off Night light in Settings → System → Display.
macOS
- In System Settings → Displays, turn off True Tone, then click Night Shift and turn it off.
Monitor and apps
- Check the monitor's menu for a warm color temperature or an eye-care or low blue light mode.
- Pause blue-light filter apps while you use the white screen.
The screen turns off after a few minutes
Tick Keep the screen awake while it's showing before you start. If your browser can't do that, change your system's timer.
Windows 11
- Open Settings → System → Power & battery and set a longer time under Screen and sleep (or Screen, sleep & hibernate timeouts).
macOS
- Open System Settings → Lock Screen and set a longer time for turning the display off when inactive.
It doesn't fill the whole screen
Some browser extensions block full screen, and iPhones don't offer it to web pages at all. Try another browser on a computer. On an iPhone the white fills the browser window, so turn the phone sideways for a larger area.
Common questions
What is a white screen used for?
A plain white screen shows up dust, smudges and dead pixels, lets you check whether brightness is even across the panel, and can light your face on a video call. It also works as a soft light for reading notes or photographing small objects.
How do I make my screen completely white?
Click the white box above, and the page fills your screen with white and hides everything else. Press Esc, or double-click or double-tap, to go back. On an iPhone the white fills the browser window instead, so turn the phone sideways for a bigger area.
Can I use a white screen as a light for video calls?
Yes. Open the white screen on a second monitor, a laptop or a tablet facing you and turn its brightness up. Warm white usually looks more natural on skin than pure white, and moving the screen closer gives more light.
Is a white screen bad for my eyes or my screen?
A bright white screen can feel harsh in a dark room, so lower the brightness or switch to warm white if it is uncomfortable. It won't harm an LCD screen. On an OLED screen, any bright image left in place for hours adds wear, so don't leave it on all day.
How do I use a white screen to clean my monitor?
Show the white screen with the brightness up: dust and fingerprints stand out as gray specks and smears. Turn the monitor off and let it cool before wiping with a dry or slightly damp microfiber cloth, using light pressure, then check again on white.
