How to take the CPS test
- Pick a test length: 1, 5, 10, 15, 30, 60 or 100 seconds.
- Click the big button, or press the space bar, to start. The timer starts with your first click.
- Keep clicking until the time runs out. Holding the space bar down counts as one press.
- Read your clicks per second and your rank, then try to beat your best score.
How CPS is calculated
CPS means clicks per second. The test counts every press from your first click until the time runs out, then divides by the length of the test. Forty clicks in a 5-second test is 8.00 CPS. While you click, the live number shows your clicks over the last second, so you can see when you speed up or slow down.
The test counts a press the moment the button goes down. It uses the left mouse button, a tap on a touch screen, or the space bar; the first press decides which, and the rest of the test only counts that one. Short tests reward a fast start, while 30, 60 and 100 seconds show how long you can keep a pace. Browsers time clicks to within a millisecond or two, which is plenty for a test that lasts seconds.
CPS ranks
The ranks are our own scale, a name for each speed. They are not a comparison with other people.
| Clicks per second | Rank |
|---|---|
| 15 and above | Extreme |
| 12 to 14.99 | Rapid |
| 10 to 11.99 | Very fast |
| 8 to 9.99 | Fast |
| 6 to 7.99 | Quick |
| 4 to 5.99 | Steady |
| Under 4 | Easygoing |
Clicking techniques
Most people click with one finger. Jitter clicking tenses the arm so the finger vibrates on the button, and butterfly clicking alternates two fingers on the same button. Both can go well past what a single finger does, and both are hard on your hand: take breaks, and stop if your hand or wrist hurts. Some games and servers limit clicking speed or ban certain techniques, so check their rules before you rely on one.
Tips for a fair score
- Use a wired mouse, or a wireless one with a charged battery.
- Close other busy tabs and apps, so the browser doesn't miss a beat.
- Rest your hand between attempts. A tired hand clicks slower.
- Don't use an autoclicker or a rapid-fire button: the score then measures the program, not you.
Clicks not counting? Try these fixes
Some clicks don't count
- Click inside the green button area with the left button. Right and middle clicks don't count.
- Use the same input for the whole test: if you started with the mouse, space bar presses don't count until the next test.
- If you clicked hard and fast and the count still lags, check the mouse with the mouse test: a button that doesn't always register shows up there too.
Windows 11
- Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Mouse → Additional mouse settings and, on the Buttons tab, turn off ClickLock. It holds the button down after a long press.
macOS
- On a trackpad, taps count only with Tap to click turned on in System Settings → Trackpad. Pressing the trackpad down counts either way.
The space bar scrolls the page instead
- Click the green button area once, so the page knows the space bar is for the test.
- If a button or a form field on the page has focus, the space bar works that instead. Click the button area again.
The score is much higher than usual
If the result warns about clicks less than 15 ms apart, the mouse may be double-clicking by itself. Run the mouse test to check, and see how to fix a mouse that double-clicks.
- Open your mouse maker's app and make sure no macro or rapid-fire setting is assigned to the left button.
Common questions
What is a CPS test?
A CPS test counts how many times you click in a set time and divides by the seconds to give clicks per second. Pick a length from 1 to 100 seconds, then click as fast as you can. The timer starts with your first click.
What is a good CPS score?
There's no single answer: it depends on how you click, your mouse and the test length. Our ranks give each speed a name, from Easygoing under 4 CPS to Extreme at 15 and above. Compare your scores with your own best rather than with other people's.
Can I use the space bar instead of the mouse?
Yes. Press the space bar to start, and the whole test counts space bar presses. Holding the key down counts once, because the test ignores the key's auto-repeat. Best scores for the mouse, the space bar and taps are kept apart.
Where is my best score saved?
In this browser's local storage, on this device only. It is never sent to us. Clearing your browser data, or pressing Clear my scores, deletes it.
Why is my CPS suddenly much higher than usual?
If the result also warns about clicks less than 15 ms apart, your mouse may be double-clicking by itself. A worn switch turns one press into two, which inflates your score. Check it with the mouse test, which counts unintended double clicks.
