Privacy notice
Plug and Check (plugandcheck.com) offers free hardware tests that run in your browser. This page explains what the site collects, why, and how long it keeps it.
The short version
- Video from your camera, sound from your microphone, your keystrokes, clicks, touches and controller input are handled in your browser and never sent to us.
- No cookies on the public site, no advertising trackers, no Google Analytics.
- We count how the tests are used without storing IP addresses.
- We only have your email address if you give it to us, and we use it only to reply.
What stays on your device
- Camera and microphone. When a test needs them, your browser asks for permission first. The picture and sound go from your device to the page in your browser and no further. Photos and recordings you make in a test stay in your browser's memory until you download them or leave the page.
- Keyboard, mouse, touch, controllers and MIDI devices. The page reads key presses, clicks, touches and button presses only to draw the test, and never sends them anywhere. Even so, there is no reason to type a password into a keyboard test.
- Results. The report at the end of a test is put together in your browser. It goes wherever you paste it, and nowhere else.
- Saved settings. Your browser's local storage keeps your light or dark theme choice, and some tests keep their settings or your best score the same way, for example in a click speed test. These stay in your browser, are never sent to us, and are removed when you clear this site's data in your browser settings.
What we collect and why
- Usage counts. When a page loads or you use a feature, for example when a test starts, finishes or can't find your device, the site adds one to a count for that day, page and event. No IP address, cookie or other identifier is attached. We use the counts to see which tests work and where people get stuck.
- Messages. What you write in the feedback form, its topic, the page you sent it from and the time, plus your email address if you add one so that we can reply. When a message arrives, our phone gets a notification through our own push server and Apple's push service. It shows the topic, the page and the start of the message, never your email address.
- Email. If you write to [email protected], we get your message and your email address, and use them only to answer you.
- Abuse protection. To stop spam, the server keeps IP addresses in memory for up to an hour and never writes them to disk.
Cookies
The public site sets no cookies. The only cookie belongs to the site owner's login for the admin area, which visitors never receive.
Services we use
- Cloudflare delivers and protects the site, so it processes your IP address and the details of your requests to do that. Cloudflare Web Analytics counts visits without cookies. Cloudflare also forwards email sent to [email protected]. See Cloudflare's privacy policy.
- Gmail (Google) is where that email arrives and where we answer it from. See Google's privacy policy.
- Google Search Console tells us which searches show the site. It reports totals, not individual visitors.
- Fonts are served from this site, so loading a page sends nothing to a font service.
Ads in the future
The site shows no ads today. We plan to add them later, most likely from Google AdSense, to pay for running the site. Ad services usually use cookies and similar technology to choose and measure ads. Before any ads appear, we will update this page to say which services we use and what they collect, and visitors in the European Economic Area, the UK and Switzerland will be asked for consent before any ad cookies are set. You will be able to say no. The tests will keep running in your browser either way.
How long we keep it
- Usage counts: kept as daily totals. They contain no personal data.
- Messages: as long as they help us improve the tests. We delete any message on request.
- Emails: as long as we need them to answer you and follow up. We delete them on request.
Your choices
You can ask what we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. Email [email protected], or send a message through the feedback form with the email address concerned. If you are in the EU or the UK, you can also complain to your data protection authority.
Who is responsible
Plug and Check is run by the site operator, who is responsible for the data described here. Contact: [email protected].
Changes
If what we collect changes, we will update this page and the date at the top.
